First Week of February

Yesterday was a spectacular day! Don's blood tests came out better than last month. He will be posting results on his Myeloma Hope blog ... probably tomorrow.

Sweet Pea and I celebrated the 10 year anniversary of our first Weight Watchers meeting...
In April/May we each will celebrate our 7th anniversary of reaching goal.

Sunset picture by Sweet Pea.
We think this may be a female redpoll. She was flocking with the goldfinches (in their drab winter coats).... except she was quite territorial.

Sweet Pea got all dressed up for running in 40 degree weather at 3:00 this afternoon. I can almost believe spring will come eventually.

Two questions have come to our attention recently.
1. What can I do about my high triglycerides?
2. What is so bad about high-fructose corn syrup?

Today I found both in an extensive article in Life Extension magazine, March 2009, page 90.
This sentence ties the two questions together....

"When high-fructose corn syrup is consumed, blood sugar goes directly to the liver instead of to muscle and fat cells. The liver utilizes the sugar to produce triglycerides."

And a PS to runners: Don't assume that all packaged post-race foods are free of high-fructose corn syrup and partially hydrogenated fat.

Over last weekend I had a rotten cold, but like most colds, it is fading away. Looking forward to better days! The worst of the cold winter is past.

That's a wonderful anniversary to celebrate. A decade at your goal weight -- whoo hoo!

It's interesting because the corn industry's launched a PR campaign to make sure people know HFCS is not bad in moderation and has the same nutritional value as regular sugar. They must really be feeling the pinch.

Thanks for your comments!

My first paragraph was not clear about our WW anniversary... this is 10 years since we started WW.
I have added this: "In April/May we will celebrate our 7th anniversary of reading goal."

And yes, I have seen those commercials promoting the safety of high-fructose corn syrup. There must be millions of dollars involved.

Feel better!

Love the pics.

Congrats on your WW anniversary -- you look fantastic.

High fructose cornsyrup is really horrible. I try very hard to avoid it. (But I still can't shake those dang chocolate covered peanuts)

I am very much looking forward to reading Don's update (yippee!)...in the meantime, you might be interested in Fanatic Cook's report on high-fructose corn syrup: http://fanaticcook.blogspot.com/2009/01/theres-mercury-in-high-fructose-corn.html

Congrats on the great dates and milestones! I tried to buy products that did not have sugar added (like crackers, etc) for an entire month last year. It was almost impossible!

Wonderful photos, esp. the sunset!

Congrats on all the good news. I'm surprised it got up to 40 degs there. Not at all surprised about the post-race food having lots of bad things in them, though. Often runners think they can eat anything after a race and do just that.

Hey happy days with the good blood work for Don! And warmer weather too - nice.

I took our household off the high fructose corn syrup last year, and over the last couple of years, I've gotten in the habit of supplying my own post race food. Sometimes what is offered by the race just doesn't appeal to me.

Stay warm!

What beautiful pictures! I never heard of a redpoll. There are lots of birds around my house but I can only identify the obvious ones, like a turkey vulture or a hawk. Turkey vultures look just like the cartoon version of them.
